| When out for a long walk I sometimes wonder what would happen if one of us fell over and broke a limb. At the January 2011 Monthly Meeting we heard about the Hertfordshire Air Ambulance from Debbie Harvey and I felt reassured. She outlined the valuable work they do, landing in extremely difficult terrain and whisking the injured to the most appropriate hospital. | "I've come about the drains!" got himself unhindered into many an archeological site. Tony gave us a wonderful, entertaining and informative talk at our May 2010 meeting about Roman Baths and Greek Temples, not to mention the dome of St. Paul's. He assured us that with a hard hat, a pencil and a clip board you can get on to any building site with a view to doing a spot of archaeology and when challenged all you have to say is, "I've come about the drains". We learned why arches stay up! Why Roman loos have two holes and he made sure we did not get hold of the wrong end of the stick! | It was very salutary but a great privilege to hear, at the March 2010 Monthly Meeting, the eloquent and heart rending talk by Professor, The Lord McColl of Dulwich CBE, Chairman of Mercy Ships UK and Emeritus Professor of Sugery at Guy's Hospital in London. Ian told us about his work as a surgeon on the Mercy Ship "Africa", which is stationed off the West African Coast for 10 months of the year. |
