Chianciano Terme

CHIANCIANO TERME

Not everyone had an opportunity to visit the old town, so here are some shots. No surprise any longer that it is built on a hill, as can be seen from this shot of
Chianciano Terme taken near the Hotel Ricci.

The old town entrance
arch is about a 15 minute walk from the Hotel Ricci; first steeply downhill and then uphill through the arch and to the clock tower. A busy road at the evening rush hour, but the Piazza Fontana was peaceful enough during the day; but not always so, with a wall plaque near the clock tower commemorating an assassination of a local by the Nazis during their occupation. Chianciano Terme also has its wall shields of past governers.

An interesting museum, situated half-way to the old town included interesting Etruscan objects unearthed from local archeological digs. Wonderful gold jewellery, pots and this Etruscan “
tiller” or shaft from a horse drawn cart or chariot.

The view from the old town.
